Clinical Pastoral Education
In an effort to provide the highest quality of patient care and community education Spartanburg Regional established and maintained a Clinical Pastoral Education program for more than 35 years. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a training program for clergy persons of all religions and faith groups. The focus of this experiential method of theological education is the learning of the art of pastoral care. The clerics enrolled in this program minister to patients and their family members, providing spiritual care under the supervision of a certified CPE supervisor with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc. (www.acpe.edu.), an internationally recognized organization dedicated to theological training.
Spartanburg Regional offers part-time and full-time training units, a Residency program as well as, Supervisory Education. The ministers enrolled in these programs are able to develop their skills in ministering to individuals and families from a variety of religious traditions and faith groups, empowering those being served to make greater use of their spiritual resources as they face end-of-life issues. Given the opportunity to minister to individuals who in the midst of their brokenness are seeking a human connection, the chaplain resident/intern is provided the opportunity to reflect on life’s deepest questions. Through the use of case studies and small group experiences the students are able to look at their ministry and develop their pastoral skills, as well as, the capacity to be with those who are hurting.
The Spartanburg Regional Clinical Pastoral Education program is a fully accredited CPE center with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. The CPE students and residents receive one to four units of credit, a requirement to be a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association for Professional Chaplains. Currently, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has four CPE Chaplain Residents and a number of CPE Chaplain Interns. Within Spartanburg Regional there are two ACPE Supervisors, The Reverend M. Carson Rogerson, BCC, M.Div. (email@example.com ) and The Reverend Robin D. Booth, BCC, D.Min. (firstname.lastname@example.org), who direct and supervise the CPE program.
